Dear Laurie,
I am currently studying Nurse Midwifery and have "learned" from a well respected author that breastfeeding puts babies at risk for ear infections and from another author, that jaundice is an indication for discontinuing breastfeeding and in another, that only five pumping sessions per day is necessary to maintain a supply in a mother of a premie unable to breastfeed. I have also learned all babies need immediate warming and assessment under a "french-fry warmer" and not until s/he has proven stable in temperature, medications are given and assessments are completed, can baby be wrapped in blankets and offered to its mother.
When I have discussed this with faculty, I am reminded that I need to recognize these texts are written according to evidence whether I like the outcome or not. A misinterpretation of the evidence, in my humble opinion.

Hello All,
I am looking for some input from the members of the list who are also
midwives. I have been asked to speak to a group of nurse (hospital birth)
and lay (home birth) midwives about "what's new in breastfeeding" I
thought talking about the new AAP guidelines might be interesting. To gear
it more to the needs of midwives I thought about "When is supplementing
needed? and how to support and protect breastfeeding when it is is ordered
by the ped". I'm having trouble putting together a topic. I think
because I am not familiar with the knowledge base or practice needs. The
conference planner was pretty vague. I'll ask some of my local collegues,
but I thought a wider group might have some insight. Please email me
privately. Thank you in advance.
