My grandfather (born 1902) stated that when he was a boy, women in 
Brooklyn sat on their stoops (steps leading up to the front door of the 
house) breastfeeding their children and conversing with the neighbors, 
and no one batted an eyelash. Shirts were strictly optional! He was one 
of my best supporters when I breastfed his great grandkids, and birthed 
one of them at home.
