What should we be saying to mothers when asked? I'd
like to have some discussion on this.
Correct me if I am wrong, but when I am teaching a patient, tell her that it
is quite obvious that we cannot "measure" what the baby gets at the breast
by cc's or ounces. We must go based on baby's weight gain (the standard ounce
per day gain) and number of wet and poopy diapers. My favorite "trick" for
mom is to put a tissue in the disposable diaper so that she can be sure baby
is wetting, and to keep a journal of nurses, wets, and poops so that she can
seek help if baby isn't attaining the correct number. As a nurse I have been
taught to rely on "numbers" (so many cc's etc.) However, I believe
especially in breastfeeding, observing the baby rather than a number is truly the most
important way to go.
Hope this is correct, if not would someone please tell me, after all I am
still learning...that is why I am an IBCLC student lol.
