The rule of thumb I give to new moms and families is that if it wouldn't  
make sense in evolution then it probably doesn't make sense now (i.e.  
supplementing because the colostrum is "bad", breastmilk isn't good after x age  of 
baby, you can't breastfeed through a pregnancy etc.).  If it wouldn't  work in a 
world where formula didn't exist then it probably isn't breastfeeding  friendly 
advise.  
The best one I have heard is from a mother for whom I was a doula and  
lactation support.  She is from Columbia and when her son was five months  old she 
went (from the US) to visit her family in Columbia.  The PEDI told  her to wean 
prior to the trip because the water there was "bad".   HUH?  The mother 
called me and told me, "Listen to this...and then ended  with the fact that she 
will never again use that PEDI."  She also had some  colorful language while 
describing this exchange because she was so frustrated  with the doc.  It would be 
funny if it weren't so sad.
