Dear Friends:
I have a funny story about the modern version of this pump, that is an
update of the Whittlestone milker, invented by a lactation physiologist and
was designed to look beautiful. I think that there were 6 originally made, and
they were housed in cabinets made of fine woods.
This modern version feels like a baby's mouth if you stick your fingers
into the flanges: they are soft and the soft foamy texture of the flange
clings to your fingers and feels good. The suction is gentle and I can't imagine
that any mother could be injured by such a pump.
But the kits that I saw were awful to take apart, clean, and put
together. There were too many parts that required a lot of attention and fine-motor
coordination.
At an ILCA conference, I spoke with the Whittlestone representative
about this problem. I told him I liked the pump but the kits were a barrier to
rentals and sales. He became defensive, and took my helpful comments as
challenges. He grabbed a pump kit, took it apart and was determined to show me how
easy it was to re-assemble. He dropped two of the pieces on the floor while he
was trying to put it together!
Poor guy.
