"Throughout their lives, breastfeeding can offer children protection
against serious health conditions, including obesity, diabetes and high
blood pressure." So begins Governor Schwarzenegger's Proclamation
naming August as Breastfeeding Awareness Month.
Feeding babies as nature intended gives lifelong protections – even against
obesity. At birth, babies are totally dependent on others to survive.
Studies show that breastfeeding completes an infant’s development, and is
“the final stage of birth” for mother. It allows complex body systems to
mature: the brain, nerves and digestive tract. Without breastfeeding,
babies get more illnesses of childhood (like ear infections), and chronic
illnesses that can last a lifetime (like obesity, diabetes and high blood
pressure). Children who are not breastfed, and women who do not breastfeed,
have a higher incidence of life-threatening cancers. California would save
an estimated $475 million annually if only half of its mothers breastfed
exclusively for the first six months of their babies' lives.
