Oops, Mary, I see you did a test weight and the intake was only 31 grams or
about an ounce (right?). You did good! I would say that everything is
probably from the baby being too sleepy, with not quite right latch on, and
probably little active sucking in the first few days. I say this because of
the jaundice, the weight loss, and the poor intake at the breast. A baby who
is actively sucking will remove this much in about 15 minutes (ESTIMATED).
Babies who are sliding downward from poor intake are often too sleepy with
weak sucking. Some kind of supplementing was needed at the time you saw her,
which you recommended.
