Dear Friends:
Does anyone have an email address for the Editor of Maternal-Child
Nursing? The September/October 2004 had an important article in it about using
principles of newborn behavioral state organization when working with dyads. It
is by D. J. Karl MS, PNP, CS. I would like to write a letter to the editor.
I am glad this article is published.
I am a little sad that there is an emphasis on nursing 'every 2 hours',
and also that '15 minutes each side' is presented as a common pattern. There
was no exploration of what infant states are associated with the most feeding
cues. In fact, infant cues did not seem to be mentioned much, except in the
case study, when the baby didn't have any to start, until he was put
skin-to-skin.
I wonder if skin-to-skin is a way of organizing babies to move them into
a state of more feeding cues. I know that sounds obvious, but in the context
of this paper, it is wonderful to discover a new facet to the jewel that is
newborn behavior, self-attachment, and maternal love.
This is an important paper that I wish everyone would read.
warmly,
