I am an advanced practice nurse and a Lactation Consultant and I oversee the Lactation Services and Home Visit program in our hospital birthing unit. I have been an RN for 27 years. Because I'm an advanced practice nurse, I am in that pay grade and my years of experience are calculated in. We have 5 LC's who work in our department, and they are all RN's and are paid on the RN scale per their years of experience. Having the LC designation does not give them more pay; many nurses in hospitals specialize and have advanced certification in various areas. Pay is usually based on years of experience. These RN's also provide home visits and work on the floor.

However, much of this is done by what drives the market. RN's received a higher pay raise than advanced practice nurses did this year. (Even tho I am an RN) I was told it was because there is greater demand for floor nurses, not advanced practice nurses. I could probably work weekend nights and receive more pay than I do as an advanced practice nurse. Everything is market driven, and since no one wants to work weekend nights, they pay more!

Just my $.02!

Warmly, Linda
