Vaishali asks for information on this.
I'm part of a group carrying out a literature review for the Norwegian
government, trying to determine whether the evidence says anything
unequivocal on bedsharing, breastfeeding, pacifier use and SIDS. I'm in the
part of the group looking at bedsharing and SIDS, and we found 75 articles
on that alone. Most of them were not good enough research on which to base
anything at all and will not be used in our final analysis. One such
article is the furniture safety article about suffocation risk, from October
2003.
So far the only thing we can say with any certainty is that smoking is
really really bad. This was not one of the things we were looking at but it
crops up in all the studies.
Parents who smoke should be advised in no uncertain terms that their babies
will be less likely to die of SIDS if they have their own beds.
The rest of the research has been very frustrating to me because the studies
that discuss bedsharing and SIDS, rarely mention whether the babies were
breastfed or not. (Ditto the ones on pacifier use, which are also notorious
for not distinguishing between partial and exclusive BF, which tends to make
pacifier use look like it has little effect on BF success.)
Baby Friendly UK has a good leaflet on bedsharing. www.babyfriendly.org.uk
It goes through the contraindications, as well as information on how to do
it safely.
