Hello All,
I am preparing testimony for SB 618, a bill pending in the Oregon state legislature, which requires employers to accommodate their breastfeeding employees by providing a place (other than the toilet stall) and unpaid break time for pumping during the work day.
I noted with great interest the study recently published by Quan et al regarding the association between longer duration of breastfeeding and reduced risk of childhood leukemia. I would love to find more evidence in the literature that documents the importance of breastfeeding duration, thru improved health outcomes when moms continue breastfeeding longer. I am aware of evidence for reduced risk of maternal breast cancer with longer bfdg. Any other evidence that lactnetters can share would be MOST welcome.
I have learned thru hard experience that legislators need to have the dots connected for them. It's not enough to show that women who return to paid employment wean sooner, and that formula fed kids are sicker. We are facing stiff opposition this legislative session, primarily from the business lobby. They contend that 1.There is no evidence of a problem with combining paid work and breastfeeding for moms; 2.most businesses are already accommodating their breastfeeding employees, so why pass a mandate and regulate every business in the state.
Thanks in advance, and please email me personally as well as posting the list!
