Hi Lactnetters,
I have permission from a mother I have known to post her question. She
has just found out she is 10 weeks pregnant and nursing her daughter 4-6
times a day who will be 1 on July 2. She has been told by her specialist
in fertility to stop nursing today when she starts the lovenex and
prometrium tonight. She feels very upset as her baby has not taken bottles
or much liquids from a cup till now. She is also worried about nutrition
and baby wanting to nurse. The baby also has been diagnosed with acid
reflux by a pediatric gastroenterolist during the past year.
I have searched the archives and see some mixed opinions. Is there
any current advice on what she should do. Since she feels she does not
want to jeapardize the pregnancy, she is inclined to trust her specialist.
I have reviewed the recommendations on abrupt weaning from the
Breastfeeding Answer Book and am supporting the mom's decision. She just
wants to know if there is any other support about the safety of continuing
even partial breastfeeding. I have also advised her she may need to pump a
little the next few days if weaning is the final answer.
Do any of you experts have any other advice or recent
recommentdaytions. She has posted her question on Dr. Hale's website
tonight, also. I have written to Dr. Newman, also.
TIA for any advice I may provide to the upset mom.
Ellen Mahony, RN, IBCLC
