I always ask the mother's permission before I touch her or the baby and
I always explain with a demonstration when possible, what I am going to
do. With any demo I give, I always preface it with, "I make this look
VERY easy, but I started exactly where you are today, feeling a bit
awkward and unsure. I found with practice, I became efficient very
quickly and you will too." For the most part, I find that mommy's love
that I can get their milk to squirt straight out of the breast and they
immediately want the family to see! It is very reassuring. The next
time I see them, I ask them to show me what they have learned. I have a
GREAT photo of milk squirting and you may email me privately if you
want a copy [log in to unmask] I will do whatever means to empower
these mommy's, but what works with one, may not work with the next or
one may need more demos to feel adept at it.
