Don't disregard the importance of knowlege.  Good studies have been done 
on elephant groups with and without grandmothers (Matriarchs).  It seems 
that Matriarchs remember where to find food when times are lean or dry, 
and groups without Matriarchs are much more vulnerable to starvation 
than those with.  The effects of starvation are particularly hard on the 
pregnant and the young.
