What Fish Should Pregnant Women Eat?
While I recommend cold-water, oily fish for its beneficial omega-3 fatty
acids, women who are pregnant should be wary of certain types of fish. Those
types more likely to be contaminated with toxins such as mercury, dioxin and
polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) should be avoided or limited, as they can harm
developing nervous systems. Non-toxic fish rich in omega-3s (which can help
with cognitive and visual development) can be eaten more often. Follow these
guidelines:
* Avoid all fish with high mercury levels: shark, tilefish, king
mackerel, and swordfish.
* Eat sparingly these fish: farmed salmon (4-6 ounces per month) and
tuna (avoid tuna steaks, and consume no more than 6 ounces of canned tuna per
week).
* Eat frequently: wild Alaskan salmon and sardines, 2-3 times per week.
