This mom can perhaps bring in some banked human milk (a small amount is
all she'd need), or manually express some colostrum in advance and bring
that to feed to the baby immediately after birth if she doesn't latch
right away. She can bring in research on the added risk of diabetes
from artificial milk, and ask her pediatrician to insist that her baby
get no non-human milk at all, for any reason. She can keep the baby
with her all the time (continuous skin to skin contact greatly reduces
the risk of hypoglycemia in infants), and can sign herself and the baby
out against medical advice if necessary. If she remains calm and
reasonable, there will be no grounds for the hospital to threaten a
psychiatric consult (a weapon sometimes used when moms try to go against
medical advice).
