The other day, when I was looking at the photo of the mom talking to the
president, my 9 year old, Joanna, saw it and, to my great surprize, said
"Ooh yuck, that's sick! She needs to have a blanket or something!". I was
really surprized that the girl who doesn't hesitiate to say that she nursed
for two years and that my milk was "tasty" would have that kind of reaction.
Then, I realized that, as the youngest, she hasn't been around anyone
breastfeeding much, since she was a baby, where my others can all remember
me nursing younger siblings. Of course, she didn't object to the fact that
the mom was breastfeeding, just that she had her whole breast exposed. I
think this is an example of why I, and some other American breastfeeding
enthusiasts, think that giving Americans a chance to get used to seeing
babies breastfeeding discretely in public, first, is the only way we can
hope to ever have it become accepted as it is in most other cultures. It is
sure nice that there are places where breastfeeding is accepted for the
natural and beautiful thing it is, though!
