Since I had my fourth baby at a hospital (instead of at home like the
previous two births) I have been able to see first hand what a new moms gets from
artificial baby milk makers. I have never once "cashed in" the coupons they have
sent or given them away to anyone. I always assumed when these coupons are
used they can track that it was cashed in--is this true??So even though they may
know I don't use their product it has not detered them at all as my son is now
10 mths old and I have gotten stuff every few weeks from them since birth and
of course the actual free samples at my door step twice.
Two of the mailings that I recently got stands out in my mind since it is so
strong in how it undermines moms and makes them think that they *need* their
product. The ad was this: older baby with gallon of (cows) milk with question
mark on it, baby has straight/blank face on it. Then within a week another ad
with an older baby with a gallon of (cows) milk with a question mark on it
except this time the baby has a *very distressed* face. All the info in these
brochures were the same and included coupons. To me the marketing is clear, gets
mom thinking-- I wonder if my baby needs this?? and then within a week you get
another brochure with a baby even more distressed by the fact of just having
cows milk (or if your a breastfeeding mom your milk alone isn't good), my baby
surely needs something extra now that they are older.
Just imagine if every month for the last 10 mths I had gotten a brochure
telling me how great breastfeeding is and how important it is to continue. I
wonder what our breastfeeding rates would be then?
quote from brochure " Your growing toddler's brain will nearly triple in size
during the first 24 months of life. No wonder she needs the best nutrition
she can get!"
My reply in my fantasy breastfeeding brochure--- So to ensure she gets the
best nutrition during this time continue to breastfeed!
