Dear Friends:
Actually, from what I have learned from the Baby-Friendly process,
'free' formula actually does cost the hospital something. The billing may be in
another department than nursing, but hospitals do pay something.
When maternity units have purchased their own formula, and made it
something that has to be counted (just like narcotics), the use plummets! Lots of
formula goes home in staff pockets and parents are sometimes given lots more
to go home with. Once formula has to be counted and signed off, those
activities stop. This is an amazing finding discovered during the Baby-Friendly
certification process.
