DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION & OUTREACH

The Great Lakes Science Center seeks an innovative, experienced, and 
entrepreneurial science education professional to provide leadership and 
manage the daily operations of an expanding Education department. 
Consistent with our recently completed strategic plan, the Director of 
Education and Outreach (Director) will oversee the enhancement of 
interpretive programs within the Center’s galleries and demonstration 
areas and direct the development and implementation of expanding 
fee-based programs both in and outside the Center. The Director is 
responsible for the development, implementation, evaluation, and 
continual improvement of all Education programs and services. She/he 
insures a high quality program and while meeting revenue goals. The 
Director reports to the Science Center’s Vice President of Education and 
Exhibits.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversees the recruitment of Education staff and volunteers and 
implements training programs for designated areas of informal 
interpretation – working cooperatively with the Science Center’s 
cross-departmental Guest Experience Team.

Provides direction for the development, implementation, and positioning 
of new and expanded fee-based programs including but not limited to: 
Van-based outreach programs to schools and community, robust summer and 
holiday camps, science classes, and overnight science camp-ins.

Leads efforts to improve the visitor experience in the Center’s 
galleries and programming spaces through development of an education 
team that’s well versed in means of interpreting science for all visitors.

Directs the day-to-day operations of the Education Department including 
personnel, programs, and fiscal management. Collaborates with the 
Science Center’s Exhibit’s Department to insure appropriate 
interpretation in Science Center galleries and to help inform and lead 
the development of new exhibits and demonstration areas.

Serves as a primary liaison and maintains a visible presence with the 
formal and informal education communities, relevant businesses, and 
community organizations at the local, state, and national levels - 
helping to identify and enrich opportunities for information exchange, 
collaboration, and the fostering of partnerships.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters degree in the sciences, education, or related field preferred 
with seven to ten years of relevant experience with increasing 
management responsibilities. The successful candidate will have 
experience in and a working knowledge of the research, trends, and 
education business practices of informal learning environments. He/she 
will also have a demonstrated ability to recruit, train, and develop 
staff and experience managing programs and budgets.

The Director must have superior organizational, interpersonal, and 
written and verbal communication skills. This individual will be a 
self-starter and must demonstrate enthusiasm, flexibility, and openness 
to new ideas.
