The latest version of the AAP breastfeeding guidelines "Breastfeeding and
the Use of Human Milk" is absolutely terrific. I just made it required
reading for our entire class of second year medical students this spring
when they study obstetrics.

But did anyone catch ABC News's misinterpretation of the guidelines this
morning? All morning they kept saying (and the news banner on the bottom of
the screen kept repeating) "Pediatricians recommend mothers breastfeed for
six months." Since the one-year recommendation received so much publicity
when the original guidelines came out in 1997 (and the media didn't get that
right either, the AAP recommendation was, and remains, AT LEAST one year) I
fear mothers and physicians might think the AAP has cut their breastfeeding
duration guidelines from at least 12 months down to 6 months. It must be
incredibly frustrating to have such excellent work misreported.
