I breastfed in the OR, or rather Janene had the opportunity to do so.
She didn't, but those moments of us gazing at each other, and her
licking the nipple--they were precious and I will never forget that time.
Of course, it was not normal hospital procedure to allow this to
happen. Period. I managed it but I did so with the help of a doula and
my own obvious assertiveness. I'll never forget the nurse trying to
rush Janene up to the nursery for a check over and me saying "no, she
needs to come nurse" and the nurse saying "uh, no, we don't ever do
that, you'll have to wait until you are out of recovery and in your
room" in a tone that suggested I was asking to hang her upside down and
naked outside the window in a blizzard. The doc spoke up and said "no,
this mom gets to breastfeed, give her the baby please." I also only had
one arm tied down so I could hold my baby and the sterile field was
moved down so my breasts were available.
