Lactnet's own Linda Pohl is an engineer as well as an IBCLC. She did a
wonderful conference on how breastpumps (and supplementers, etc) work
for the New York Lactation Consultant Assn last fall. She explained how
the peak suction, shape of the suction curve, and number of cycles per
second are all important in pumping effectiveness. It can be difficult
with a hand pump to generate the number of cycles and smooth suction
curve that works best, without fatigue. Manual expression works well,
but takes practice, and most moms need to remove milk NOW to avoid
downregulating their supplies.
