I haven't posted on here in several weeks and wanted to let ya'll know that
I am still around. My mom passed away 3 weeks ago. She had developed a bowel
blockage and went in for surgery which went well and she was up walking and
had started eating when we had a bad exposure which may have caused her
decline. She had an accident and the nurse came in to clean it up and sprayed
ammonium cloride cleaning solution quick profusely in the room. I immediately
went into respiratory distress and ended up in the ER. My mom started having
respiratory problems about 2 hours, it worsen and she coded at 2AM. They
resusitated her and she coded again and was resusitated again. She went to ICU and
every organ just stopped working. She was taken off life support 6 days later.
I have been battling secondary respiratory incidences since then. I have
been on big doses of prednisone so I am also battling the side effects of that.
The hospital told me not to return since they couldn't guarantee a safe
environment for me to visit my mom ( because of my latex allergy) so I was not
able to be with my family or say goodbye to my mother.
I had about 2500 emails and have just deleted most. I hope everyone had a
great time at the conferences and learned something new to share with their
community. I had hoped to attend the LLLI conference with my daughter and
grandson but had to cancel those plans when I found out my mom was having surgery.
While cleaning out some of my mom's things, I found tons of letters. She had
saved every letter and card she had ever received. I am going to make a
scrapbook with them but it will take a very long time. One set of letters that I
found was written when she was pregnant with my older brother and my dad was
in the Navy. The thoughts, fears, and concerns were the same ones I felt while
pregnant with my first child, and also many that my daughter voiced while
pregnant with her first ( although my daughter didn't write letters-it was
mostly email and cell phones) It was really interesting to see the common thread
thoughout the generations. And the baby care book from 1946 had good pretty
breastfeeding information. At least they encouraged it and warned of the
dangers of substitute milk.
I have tons of letters and cards to go through over the next months. While I
was used to be upset that my mother was a packrat, I now am glad she saved
the cards and letters. They certainly are a treasure.
