I have been fascinated by the religion and breastfeeding comments!
In the discussion about breastfeeding in church, I am reminded of a
lovely story told to me by my friend Tom, who was a Catholic priest for
many years.
While a very young priest ministering in Africa, Tom celebrated Mass
every week for his village. One day, right in the middle of Mass, a
baby started wailing. Suddenly, a man in the congregation shouted "Get
that child a teat!" and --lo and behold!-- the baby was passed from
hand to hand until it found the breast of a woman who could provide
some milk (the woman was not the baby's mom). Tom was fascinated by
this -- not just because it was "normal" for a woman to nurse during a
religious service, but that a baby would be given to any woman to have
his needs met (and that any woman would consider it her "duty" to help
the baby).
Would that this were the norm everywhere, eh?
