Hi, Jessica: This is all anecdotal, but you'd better believe unsuccessful
BF and later speech (and other) issues go hand-in-hand. I freely refer any
mom/baby to therapists (mainly speech and OT) when the usual bag of
lactation tricks does not work and over the course of the years, all (not
some) but ALL tell me that the baby is set up for problems later on,
starting with the introduction of solid foods. And they are right! And
moms will tell me of previous unsuccessful BF experiences - the history
doesn't stop there. Many of these kids have trouble with solid foods, some
have trouble with language development and some have trouble with sensory
integration, particularly when they start school. I've also noticed a
similarity between the baby's nursing personality and later personality.
The laid-back nurser tends to be a laid-back toddler (if there is such a
thing!) or the agressive "high-needs" nurser tends to continue to be high
needs later on.
I don't find any of this hard to believe, when one looks at the thought
processes behind oral-motor development. This would be a great study!
Maybe I can talk my daughter into doing it when she finishes her doctorate
in OT this May!
