Heather asked whether bf moms should avoid eating "junk" foods with
artificial ingredients ("E" ingredients) -- whether those ingredients
would harm the baby through mom's milk. I've no hard and fast data on
this, just very strong opinion. In all honesty, no one should be eating
artificial flavors, colors or preservatives -- pregnant, breastfeeding
or not. I'd ask the dad who inquired about this whether he planned to
never feed his child anything with these "E" ingredients. If the answer
was yes, then both he and the baby's mother should abstain from these
foods, too. They're simply not good for you no matter how old you are.
As to whether they'd "harm" the baby through breastmilk, I'd think not
any more than they would "harm" the baby once he starts eating table
food. I always find it odd that new parents are so concerned about
feeding their baby artificial ingredients but don't stop to think about
what ingesting those ingredients is doing to their own bodies or their
older children's bodies.
