Funny that this topic should come up now, the new AAP guidelines are out and they specifically mention the use of breastfeeding as an analgesic under the heading Neurodevelopment. With 2 articles cited.

Subject: Refusal to Allow Breastfeeding During Blood Draw
Hi all,
VERY new here as a subscriber, but I've lurked around a few times before.
Anyway, I'm trying to find some written research to help back me up on an
issue that came up today -- I was refused to be allowed to bf my daughter
during a blood draw, so I refused the procedure. I was first told it was
because she would "associate nursing w/pain". Upon standing up for myself,
I was then told it was "a liability issue" because "if she cried, she could
choke" and they would be liable. This is funny, because they had offered
her a sucker before the procedure, which I declined, which I think could
have been a much worse choking hazard!! Upon telling the administrative
office of the situation, they called the lab, who then changed their story
again to say it was just "a safety issue".
I know there's anecdotal info out there about the painkilling and positive
psychological effects of b'feeding during needle sticks, but I'm hoping to
find written studies/articles/etc. that I can use to back myself up.
Thanks for your help!
