"I really need something specific to dark skin. Is there in
fact, a way to take Vit D supplementation without taking a multi vitamin
complex? Any suggestions? Thanks," Ann Conlon-Smith, IBCLC, LLLL
I recently attended a lecture on Vitamin D supplementation of the breastfed
infant which was presented by a local Neonatologist well versed in
breastfeeding matters. We were not given a reference list at the lecture, but I could
contact her and obtain one.
She mentioned the use of Bio-D emulsion and said the usual dose is one drop
on Mom's finger and then placed in the baby's mouth will yield a dose of 400
IU to the infant.
An interesting point she mentioned is that darker pigmented individuals
would need a 10 fold dose of solar exposure to synthesize the same amount of D3
as a lighter pigmented individual.
Hope this helps.
