Hi all,
I have an interesting case and not enough details. Permission to post. Baby
was nursing well in hospital and starting to gain before discharge. At one
week appointment with pediatrician still gaining. At this appointment
parents were told their baby has a biotin deficiency. What the parents heard
was that their baby could die from this in 2 months. Mom continued to nurse
the baby but was very upset and mostly stayed in bed for 2 days. They later
went to a specialist who told them it wasn't a complete deficiency. At day
10 baby went 12 hours with no diapers. Pediatrician said to feed baby and
call LC. When they came in at 11 days baby was almost one pound under birth
weight. Baby transferred 0.1 ounces at breast.
Instructions to FEED the baby and pump breasts given. 48 hours later mom
calls to say she is only getting 5-12cc per pumping. She is using Lactina
and pumping every 3 hours for approximately 15 minutes, both breasts
together.
Questions that I have: Do you think she could have been so upset by the
diagnosis that she just dried up? Would you try fenugreek or reglan? Any
thoughts about the biotin deficiency? I will be seeing her tomorrow.
Thanks for any insight.
