I would highly recommend a gel pad for the mother you posted about but not
Soothies. My preference and that of the hospitals I work with is the Comfort
Gel pad by Hollister (formerly marketed as MaternaMates by Kendall). Soothies
have a cloth backing - I think it may be flannel - and mothers I have worked
with who only were able to get Soothies reported that when milk leaked and
"stayed" in the cloth layer that it smelled bad. I know there are many benefits
to breastmilk remaining on the nipples but not in this manner. There is good
information at the Hollister web site and several good research articles have
been published on the use of Hydrogels.
I have no financial interest in this product.
