Hi Tania,
Colicky symptoms alone are more likely to be caused by oversupply in the
mother or difficulty coordinating swallowing in the infant. Infants
with eczema and crying are more likely to have allergy. When there is no
oversupply and the baby coordinates swallowing and breathing well, I do
talk to the mother about her diet. Usually there is one allergenic food
that the mother has been consuming in large quantities, like cow milk
for omnivores or soy for vegans. Eliminating that one food can
sometimes change the baby's entire personality in 24-48 hours.
Lactation consulting is a detective game, there are many clues to
uncover and follow up. Is there a family history of atopy? If so,
allergy is a stronger possibility. Has baby gained a lb a week? If so,
we are more likely dealing with oversupply.
And just to make things more complex, oversupply can cause gut damage
that can predispose to allergy. This often presents as blood in the stools.
Good luck with your studies.
