Our family has been receiving donor milk for 3 1/2 years so I would love to
revisit this subject of insurance footing the bill.

We pay approximately $1200 a month for the amount of milk we need. That
covers the milk, processing, and Fed ex charges. The milk bank makes no profit at
all from what I understand.

The last time I asked insurance about it they said they would cover a
doctor's recommended special infant formula. I told them I have a RX from my
pediatrician for the breastmilk and it would be about the same cost as the formula.
They said no way.

Of course, I have my ideas why this nonsensical answer has been given but I
am still wondering if I have a leg to stand on. We'll pay for the milk because
the formula option is not acceptable for our daughter. But it costs a lot and
I don't see how they can pay for Dr. recommended formula and not donor milk
(or a portion of). And we had really good insurance...covered my midwives and
homebirth. Heather Dana
