The New policy statement by the AAP (
www.pediatrics.org/cgi/content/full/115/2/496 )is authored by Lawrence Gartner and Dr. Eidelman. Kudos to them and
all the other authors for a very well written with very specific
recommendations. A few highlights are:

1. breast pumps and lactation consultations should be covered by insurance
payments.
2. Infant should be placed skin to skin immediately after delivery and not
moved until after the first feeding is accomplished. (other procedures that
should be delayed are even outlined)
3. Formal evaluation of milk transfer should occur twice daily in the
hospital.
4. 3-5 days postpartum the infant should be evaluated and this included
assessing latch, positioning and MILK TRANSFER.
5. They stick with the duration of BF statement of one year and beyond but
then also outline that THERE IS NO UPPER Limit and no evidence of harm from BF
3 year or more.
6. Mother and infant should sleep in proximity to each other.

For what it is worth, the only thing I did not agree with is the
recommendation to give all newborns VIt D--As I believe doing an assessment of risk is
important and more reasonable.
