I want to thank everyone who has responded to my query.
First, the mom and I did discuss that baby needs to be eating more often,
etc, during our first call--and yes, she did think she had a great baby!
Between these weeks of her calls (and I thought that the doctor was following more
closely--however he is one to tell moms to give formula at any signs of
problems without helping with the breastfeeding--I am surprised- he didn't jump into
this for this dyad in the beginning), she was supplementing with her own milk
after every feed via bottle. Baby's output has been 10 wet and 2-5 bowel
movements every day.
I did read the information in the Breastfeeding Answer Book, but it seemed
to address the issues of earlier babies---I just was not sure where this baby
fit. Mom's call yesterday----baby is definitely awake and alert. She wanted
to know if baby was hitting a growth spurt as she wants to be on the breast
about every hour for the past 2 days. Baby nurses about 10 minutes per side
and does not want to do more---I discussed breast compressions with mom. I am
wondering if using a bottle for the ebm after every nursing is a part of
this.
Mom will go in for a weight check today or tomorrow depending on the weather.
There is breastfeeding support here at the clinic, but as you can see moms
are still falling through the cracks as far as follow-ups. I guess and
assumption was made that baby was nursing fine in the hospital, so everything was
okay. Unfortunately, neither pediatrician here is very supportive of
breastfeeding, and the breastfeeding knowledgeable staff is small.
Thanks again,
Gloria Thai
