Dear Pat,
Did she mean to say Methotrexate, instead of Metroxate? It is not
uncommon for Methotrexate to be prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis and
some types of cancer. I think it was also used at one time as an
abortifacient. It is a strong and potentially dangerous medication. I
would be surprised if anyone was told they could take it on a continuous
basis and breastfeed. Hale rates it as an L-5 for chronic use. My
mother had rheumatoid arthritis and was on it for years and her
Physicians were shocked it did not make her seriously ill.
Good Luck!

Subject: metroxate
I have permission from mom to ask about this med. She is renting a pump
from me and called to say she's going to have to wean because of the
above med. She needs to take 20 mg/wk for rheumetoid arthritis along
with plaquenil. I can't find metroxate in 2004 Hale, but plaquenil says
AAP "usually compatible". Anyone know anything I can tell her? Baby is
6 1/2 months and 18 lb.
