Yesterday our discharge planner was in a panic because we had a premie whose
mother couldn't get into the WIC clinic for another two weeks (her original
appointment date). I explained that WIC was a _supplemental_ program and
this mother should look forward to paying up the wazoo for the formula that
WIC would not provide as her baby grew. She looked at me like I had two
heads!
Our pediatricians here do stock formula "samples" that are given to moms at
the end of the month when their money and their WIC formula runs out. I hate
seeing that stuff but it's a reality for poor mothers who do not breastfeed.
We need to keep compassionately getting out the word about breastfeeding to
these moms!
