Thanks for those people who have emailed me with information regarding
Domperidone. To give some feedback on private emails--I have now been made
aware of three more hospitals in Australia that are using it including the
Royal Womens Hospital in Melbourne. Its use is supported in their
Breastfeeding Guidelines which are available on the net. NETS (Victoria) in
their handbook recommend it and the Australia Breastfeeding Association
has an article supporting its use. Unfortunataely our National Health and
Medical Research Council make no mention of it it their Breastfeeding
guidelines but do make mention Maxalon. The American Academy of Pediatrics
list it as a substance "usually compatible with breastfeeding." However I
have not been able to find a peak medical organisation that openly supports
its use. Apparently it has been used regularly in Canada for over 20 years
but is not officially categorised as a galactogue. Certainly Jack Newman in
Canada supports its use and I have been emailed by a Canadian neonatogist
who is happy to prescribe it. The general opinion is that the FDA don't
have the underpinning evidence to support their warning on Domperidone. I
am still pursuing sources to gather further information and I am still
particularly interested in other Australian hospitals who use it and if they
have guidelines. ANY information is greatly appreciated.
