Legal counsel and breastfeeding MD expert needed in New York (near Coney
Island).
I'm in touch with a vegan family whom I have known for years over the web/e-
mail. They took their 14m.o. to a doctor for a virus and the doctor found
the baby to be anemic (9.1) (which the literature states to be common
during illness) and asked what they were feeding the child. They told them
breastmilk and raw vegetables and yeast and then they had their child taken
away from them and were charged with child abuse and neglect. They
diagnosed the child with failure to thrive. The child is within the 25%
weight range, has met all of his milestones in terms of walking, babbling,
working the VCR, etc.
The nurse called the family becuase she was unable to feed the child and he
was losing weight rapidly and wanted to know how to feed him. Finally the
child ended up in the grandmother's custody. The family came to visit and
bring breastmilk to the baby (which the grandmother refused to accept) and
they found the piles of powdered milk and Gerber Chicken (which was just so
against their beliefs) and how lethargic and underweight their baby was and
they "abducted" their baby and are now hiding out and trying to find legal
help. They said it was on the front page of the local newspaper today.
Unfortunately it was holiday weekend so they've had the child for a few
days now without good legal counsel. They are having little luck now
finding an attorney who understands breastfeeding. They would very much
like for someone with credentials to just call and speak with the doctors
and try to just make the charges go away. Post to list or to my e-mail:
