Re: << Just to clarify - the 5 S's help calm babies by activating their
"calming reflex'...this neonatal response is switched on by simulating
a baby's sensory experience in the womb. When doing the 5 S's parents
(and professionals) will be much more successful if 1) the arms are
swaddled straight, 2) the baby is on the side or stomach (it works
equally well on the right or left side), 3) the shushing is loud (the
sound in the womb is louder than a vacuum cleaner - 24/7), and 4) the
swinging is jiggly (for crying babies the movement is fast and tiny,
like a shiver). >>

Dr. Karp wrote an explanatory article that appeared last year in Contemporatry Peds, which is available online. See:

Karp, H. (2004). A frameword and strategy for understanding and resolving colic. Contemporary Pediatrics, 24(2), 94-116. Available [online]: www.contemporarypediatrics.com/contpeds/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=108006

If the link doesn't take you directly to the article, I believe it was in the Feb 2004 edition. I really appreciated having this article as I was revising a MOD RN CE module re: parenting multiples (which should finally be available) this year. At least in the USA MOT/MOM and related organizations, health professionals, etc. are really into "parent-directed" feeding, sleeping, etc. due to "overwhelmed parent syndrome." This professional reference and a couple others helped me "reframe" that section of the module to make it more individual baby friendly.
