Dear Sara, as a sister LLL Leader, I would encourage you to start doing
home visits (in person helping) with the women who call you for LLL help.
With every baby you see in person, you will learn. See if the hospitals will
let you come in and do rounds as an LLL volunteer. Let your co-Leaders know
you want to do home visits. This will take time out of your family schedule
and you will be doing this usually on a last minute notice. Moms can also
come to your house. Look at the ILCA and IBLCE professional standards and
ethics, and start doing some of them with LLL women. For example, assessing
the mom's anatomy and baby's mouth, written care plans, giving pamphlets or
handouts, making referrals when appropriate. Read The Lactation Consultant
in Private Practice. If you can afford it, rent a Baby Weigh Scale or
purchase a Tanita BLB12 and do test weights on every helping situation.
FInding moms to help is more doable as an LLL Leader but it will impact your
time for your family. But that is how this profession is -- you mostly have
to work around the mother's schedule or needs. Best wishes to you, Kathy
Eng, BSW, IBCLC, LLL Leader
