I want to put in a word for Johnson & Johnson Pediatric Institute in regard
to their past support of breastfeeding. In 1998 they produced a video
titled, "Amazing Talents of the Newborn: a Video Guide for Healthcare
Professionals and Parents." In this video, pediatrician and neonatologist
Marshall Klaus presents his research about the early minutes, hours and days
of life. There is a segment of the newborn infant crawling to self-attach
at the breast immediately after birth (similar to the "Delivery
Self-Attachment" video), and the section on breastfeeding is very positive
and beautiful. There are no bottles anywhere in the whole video and
breastfeeding is emphasized throughout. It is a video I treasure and I just
can't speak highly enough of it. It is 30 minutes long, but segments could
be used in parenting or breastfeeding classes. It is still available from
Johnson & Johnson at a very reasonable cost by calling their 800 number:
1-877-565-5465. From outside the US, call (631)208-9253. Email me
privately if you want more detailed information on content.
I took a look just now at the Johnson & Johnson web site current information
on breastfeeding at
http://www.johnsonsbaby.com/learning_place/babycare/feeding/tips
and I was not impressed. Just as the INFACT Canada article warns, the
information is set out in a way that makes breastfeeding sound difficult,
painful, a hassle, while ostensibly praising it as a good choice. The
accompanying photograph has a baby not optimally positioned at the breast.
The source for the advice is listed as "FDA Consumer, A magazine of the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration." I conveyed my concerns to the Johnson &
Johnson Pediatric Institute when I called to see if the video was still
available.
(I have no connection with this company.)
