Diane,

Boy, does that take me back!  I remember when I was nursing mine some 30-40
years ago that this was a common suggestion.  At that time, the substance of
choice was Mammol ointment.  The suggestion was to take a piece of waxed
paper about 2-3 inches across, put the ointment on it and place it in your
bra.  The idea was that it kept the ointment on the nipple rather than
having it all soak into the bra.  This kept it where it could "work" as well
as reducing laundry challenges.  It made sense to me then and I don't know
if there were any drawbacks.  One might be that by having the nipple
constantly 
"bathed" in ointment it wouldn't be able to "breathe".
