My friend who had her triplets at 25 1/2 weeks is pumping for her little
survivor, Zachary. Yesterday she mentioned to a mutual friend that she was
having a lot of pain with pumping, and the mutual friend mentioned it to me.
I called her, and it sounds like she has the wrong size flanges for her
pump! She describes her nipples constantly rubbing the inside of the
flanges, and has cracks all the way around. She thought it was just normal
to hurt if you are pumping all the time. I'm going to see her soon and
hopefully sort out this issue and get her healed up. She's also pumping a
pretty large volume of milk, 6 oz every 3 hours, averaging 45-48 oz in 24
hours. What volume of milk makes you start worrying about oversupply? Her
little guy is still vented, and in the last day finally started on a regular
feeding schedule, but he takes only a very small fraction of her daily
production at this point of course. At what volume of production would you
encourage her to decrease a little?
So frustrating that she could be in pain for days and not know it wasn't
normal, and also not have the LCs or nurses checking on her.
