My sister in law had what sounds like a very similar experience, maybe there
is something in this that might be helpful to you and her. I've shared here
on Lactnet before but second child (1st bf 2+ years), gained for the 1st
month and then did not gain at all....for 2 months! Baby saw numerous HCPs
of different sorts from early childhood nurses, GP, Paediatrician and had
numerous tests of different sorts. All HCPs recommended supplementing
however, since she had previously successfully breastfed they assumed that
she knew what she was doing and NONE actually observed a bf. This was all
over Christmas and we went away and I did not see the baby over this time.
When I did I was horrified because while the baby was content and happy she
looked awful! very skinny and skin hanging. I organised for her to see an
ABA counsellor friend the next day (had nightmares that night!) and it was
discovered that she was not attaching well or transferring milk well. My SIL
was assisted to get a better attachment and given info on breast
compressions and  switch breastfeeding and within 3 days this baby was
gaining and within a few weeks she was starting to look chubby. This baby
was about to be hospitalised and would have had more traumatic and fruitless
tests, doubtless she would have been weaned all because no one bothered to
actually check that breastfeeding was actually working as it should. My SIL
was extremely angry because she had done everything she could and no one had
helped her and her baby had suffered needlessly. The thing that put everyone
off was that she was an experienced breastfeeder and she had no pain. I
would suggest that this mum get someone who knows what they are doing, prof
or lay counsellor, to have a good look at what *is* happening with
breastfeeding, perhaps there is a simple solution.
