This is an area I work with daily since my position of LC is at a military
hospital.
Nikki stated the reality-( this is something I get daily calls about) and
until the system changes the only option women who don't want to be
separated from their children have is to get out. Otherwise, they have
chosen to sign a contract for service with the military for what ever
reason. We never think we will need to go to war but thats what the
military does- go to war when ordered.
I've had a lot of luck maintaining the provision of breastmilk for
seperated moms. A fellow LC has even arranged for transport of expressed
brestmilk back from Iraq for one of her moms by obtaining dry ice from a
meat packing company there and fed-exing back the milk. I've set the same
system up for moms who had to go to other countries. It's hard but do-
able. Many of our activated reservists have also used this system when
they have been stationed away from home and baby.
I hate any parent being seperated from their child. That's why I did not
reenlist years ago after having my first daughter- there was no offer they
could make that made it worth my leaving my baby .
