Since we deal with so many babies on reflux medications, viewed as no
big deal, this Washington Post piece seemed startling:
> Stomach Acid May Keep Pneumonia at Bay
> > Associated Press
> Wednesday, October 27, 2004; Page A09
> > CHICAGO, Oct. 26 -- Widely used heartburn and ulcer drugs such as Nexium, Pepcid and Prilosec can make people more susceptible to pneumonia, probably because they reduce germ-killing stomach acid, Dutch researchers found in a study of more than 300,000 patients.

While one study doesn't necessarily equal a whole new truth, it does
suggest that perhaps medications shouldn't be the first line of attack.
Lactnet has had some useful discussions on reflux -- speculating on the
upswing we're seeing, and some breastfeeding and postural management
techniques that seem to help. So if anyone has any new insights or
studies on the topic, please share.
