Dear Teresa, I agree with you totally!
I've thought from the beginning that one of the beauties/avantages of IBCLC
is that we come from so many backgrounds and bring so many varied and rich
experiences to the practice of LC-ing.  It enriches us because we have so
many varied resources to draw from.

Where would we be today without the expertise shared by people like  Liz
Baldwin?  Kathy Dettwyler? Kathleen Auerbach?  and so many others that I
could name, who came into this by the "back door", some personal experience
that triggered their desire to help other breastfeeding mothers avoid the
problems they fought thru to breastfeed ?

IBLCE has chosen the best of criteria, by insisting on formal training in
some area (BA, BS, PhD, whatever).  This shows (hopefully) that we are
intelligent, able to learn, open to ideas.

I, too, have fears about certain required ed levels in certain types of
courses (like medicine, nursing etc.)  I have problems with licensing, when
we all know how well LLL Leaders have done over the years to assist mothers.

We are not out there to be "experts,"  we are out there to help one mother
and baby at a time,  using all our  similar skills, creative ideas and
suggestions from each other ! Remember breastfeeding is an art.    Pat in
