I just saw something on Discovery Health that ticked me off. It was a
"report" on how the benefits of breast milk are lost when it is
refrigerated or frozen. They said that when it is refrigerated for
more than 48 hours the cell-protecting benefits decrease, and that
when it is frozen, they decrease even more. (duh)
Then it went on to say that while fresh breastmilk is better than
formula, formula holds its nutritional value in the refrigerator
longer than breastmilk does (again, duh, it's full of chemicals).
Then they suggested that working moms consider alternating
refrigerated or thawed breastmilk with formula so their baby could get
the nutrition they need during the day, and that working moms of
infants should discuss this with their pediatrician. Now *that* is
the part that ticked me off.
They do not come right out and say "formula is better than breastmilk
that has been refrigerated". I suspect they don't say that directly
because it's probably not true. Instead they say "formula holds its
nutritional value in the refrigerator better than breastmilk does".
But the report implies that formula is better than refrigerated
breastmilk, and even tries to make it sound like working moms who pump
and don't use formula are giving their baby insufficient nutrition.
My suspicion is that the "research" behind this report was funded by a
formula company that is trying to scare working moms into using formula.
