Dear Friends,
As a subscriber to Lactnet and also a member of the Board of Directors of
IBLCE, it came to my attention that there was a recent unauthorized use of
the IBCLC certification mark. A Lactnet subscriber signed her name "IBCLC
(student)", our legal council has advised us that any person using the term
"IBCLC (student)" has infringed upon the IBLCE's "IBCLC" certification mark
because they have used a confusingly similar mark. IBLCE could initiate
legal action if the individual continues to use the mark. In all
probability, this subscriber did not mean to infringe or confuse, but rather
only to announce that she was studying for the exam. In future it is better
to state that one is preparing for the exam and hopes to take it next summer
rather than use the designation IBCLC student. Thanks,
Warm regards,
Cathy Liles
Board of Directors IBLCE
